1985 November Beginning of the automation project studies.
1986 November Opening of applications for the adjudication of a computer system.
December The National Library assumes the task of CDS/ISIS (UNESCO) National Distribution Centre.
1987 January The National Library commences automatized cataloguing using the CDS/ISIS system.
May It is decided to adjudicate the GEAC 9000 system.
PORBASE Statement of Principles.
October GEAC 9000 system is received.
1988 May Inauguration of the PORBASE OPAC containing 60 000 records.
1989 March Initiation of online cataloguing with the GEAC 9000 system.
1990 December Activation of the GEAC 9000 system Authority Control module.
1992 June Inauguration of the PORBASE Bibliographic products and services based on CDS/ISIS.
1993 March Distribution, for testing, of the libBASE programme that retrieves online PORBASE records for local bibliographic databases.
May PORBASE accomplishes half a million records.
December The GEAC 9000 system acquisitions module is implemented.
1994 December PORBASE registers 100 cooperating institutions.
1995 April PORBASE becomes available on the Internet through TELNET.
August The Portuguese National Bibliography is released on CD-ROM.
September The service for copying PORBASE records, from GEAC 9000, to remote systems is initiated.
1997 PORBASE becomes available on the WWW through the SIRIUS system.
1998 May Beginning of the transfer of records to the new HORIZON system that substitutes GEAC 9000.
1999 March Initiation of online cataloguing with the HORIZON system.
2002 March Beginning of the analysis for PORBASE automatic normalization for: homogenization of coded data and graphic representation of accentuated characters.
May Installation of iPAC in the HORIZON system (search by WWW).
July Update of the PORBASE WWW service that gains its own domain in http://www.porbase.org.
December The number of cooperants exceeds 150.
2003 February Release of the Online Portuguese National Bibliography
April Implementation of the automatic normalization project.
July Conclusion of the automatic normalization project.
December The “ Strategic PORBASE plan” is approved by the Cooperants Assembly. 9th PORBASE Conference, regarding “New Contexts for Cooperation”.
2004 Jan./ Dec. Development and first experimental operations of the software MANGAS and IRIS, regarding the analyse and inclusion of the bibliographic records created by the cooperant libraries in PORBASE. Development of the PORBASE Directory
  February Approval of the Online Cooperation Regulation
  May Release of PORBASE: boletim da Base Nacional de Dados Bibliográficos, 1st number 2nd serie
  Aug./ Sept. Inquiry about the learning needs in the cooperant institutions
  November 1st meeting of the Technological Forum of PORBASE
  Nov./Dec. Explanation sessions about the procedures for bibliographicrecords integration in PORBASE,  held in Lisbon (at the National Library) and in Oporto (at the Public Library).
  December Beginning of the transfer of records to the new HORIZON 7.24 .
2005 January Release of the new HORIZON version 7.24 and HIP (Horizon Information Portal).
  September Release of the new PORBASE Directory
2006 March Certification of the National Library of Portugal has Training Center
April PORBASE in Google Scholar.
May 10th PORBASE Conference, regarding “Bibliographical standardization”.
2007 January PORBASE reaches 1.500.00 bibliographics records.
